A practical website maintenance checklist

Keep a record of your website setup
Record who controls your domain, hosting and business email. Keep renewal reminders and access details in an appropriate password manager. Clear ownership makes future changes easier.
Back up before making changes
Agree a backup schedule and keep recoverable copies of important files and data. Test the recovery process instead of assuming that a backup will always restore correctly.
Check the journeys customers use
Review your menus, phone links, enquiry forms and checkout where applicable. Send a test enquiry after important changes. Fix broken links and outdated contact information promptly.
Review content and performance
Replace old offers and check that service descriptions still match what you provide. Resize large images and investigate pages that feel slow. Avoid adding features that make a simple task harder.
Define what support covers
A maintenance agreement should explain the included updates, support process and any exclusions. New pages, major redesigns and third-party subscriptions may need separate approval.
